“Uwi na ako ha?”
She looked at him and saw him smile. He squeezed her hand softly and she held on more tightly... willing, and hoping that even with what he said he’d stay a bit longer. He leaned towards her and kissed her forehead softly, then her cheeks. Contrary to what she had hoped for, he stood up ready to leave. Standing up, she took a deep breath and planted herself in front of him. She hugged him and tried to hold on to the hug for a split-second longer than a usual hug.
Around them, everyone was busy, bustling about and minding their own business. Not that she noticed. Keanu Reeves could pass by and she probably won’t notice. He held both her hands after the hug and gave her another soft kiss on the forehead. She looked at him again and was suddenly grateful they were not bathed with the iridescent glow of a light bulb for the darkness concealed her expression. Fighting the urge to ask him to stay, besides he had to leave, she asked instead for another kiss. “Isa pa...” she said playfully. She didn't want him to think she wanted him desperately to stay. He smiled, the one that showed his cute dimple, and she felt the ice she built around her melt. Bending towards her, he said, “I love you.” and kissed her lips then... passing... like the softest rain falling on bear skin. His words clouded her brain and she shook her head to clear it.
“Goodnight,” she said and watched him leave.
A few minutes later, she was back in her room lying on her bed and shutting every single thought out. She wanted to pretend he didn’t say anything.
And maybe he didn’t.
Maybe she was just hearing things and all the pondering, worrying and hoping are for nothing. Or maybe, she didn’t want to believe he said something. Or that if he did and he meant it.
She sighed and with that her icy barrier was back up.
